Canadian firm Bird Construction (Bird) has secured an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from Ontario Power Generation (OPG) for its Clarington Corporate Campus.

OPG unveiled its new campus plan in 2019, after it decided to consolidate all its non-station based staff at one location.

The new campus will be built adjacent to the existing Darlington Energy Complex in Clarington, Durham region.

Over the next few months, OPG and Bird plan to develop the architectural designs of the new building, and also focus on associated technology and engineering.

During the design phase, the two companies will ensure that the new structure includes energy conservation as well as other sustainable building features.

Ground-breaking ceremony is expected to take place in 2022, and construction of foundations and supporting parking facilities have been planned in the same year.

In 2023, Bird will conclude exterior construction works, and by 2024, it plans to complete the interiors and commissioning.

The new structure will be ready for occupancy in 2024.

During the construction phase, the project will create new job sin Clarington region and will produce spin-off economic impacts and opportunities across Durham region.

Once the new building becomes operational, it is expected to reduce OPG’s real estate and related costs, while further strengthening Durham’s role in driving clean energy.

OPG president and CEO Ken Hartwick said: “We are pleased to be taking this next step toward uniting our non-station staff under one roof in Clarington.

“The Campus Plan represents a significant investment in OPG’s future and is an indication that we see OPG leading the clean electricity sector for the next generation.”
