The University of South Wales (USW) has selected BAM to construct a new academic building at its Treforest Campus in Pontypridd, Wales, UK.

Architects Stride Treglown and Arup, in collaboration with the university, have submitted planning permission for the development.

BAM will work with the university and this design team to create detailed plans.

USW chief operating officer Mark Milton said: “This is a significant step forward in our plans for a new building that will provide space to revolutionise the delivery of STEM [science, technology, engineering, and mathematics] at USW.

“The design team has worked with the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science and created a plan for an exciting, flexible, and collaborative series of spaces that will make STEM accessible for everyone that uses the building.”

The proposed facility will offer more than 40 new spaces for teaching, learning, and research for computing, engineering, and technology.

These spaces include specialised labs for electronics and hydraulics, a flight simulator, a robotics lab, and spaces for clean and industrial research.

The building will also feature collaborative teaching areas, VR capabilities, and exhibition spaces.

BAM construction director Justin Price said: “The construction of the new building also enables us to offer a fantastic learning opportunity for students at the University of South Wales.

“BAM will work with university staff and students to provide unique opportunities on the project, ensuring we leave behind a positive legacy as well as an outstanding new building.”

The new building is planned for construction on vacant land at the Treforest Campus, where two buildings were recently demolished.

Construction is expected to commence this year and is estimated to take approximately two years, pending planning approval.
