UK-based infrastructure group Balfour Beatty has secured a £25.7m contract to renovate the Union Terrace Gardens in Aberdeen on behalf of Aberdeen City Council.

As part of the contract, Balfour Beatty will build three new pavilions, a new accessible walkway into the gardens from Union Street, and associated landscaping and lighting.

Balfour Beatty Scotland and Ireland regional managing director Hector MacAulay said: “We are looking forward to working with Aberdeen City Council to transform the historic Union Terrace Gardens, which, on completion, will significantly contribute to the council’s City Centre Masterplan.

Additionally, the infrastructure group will carry out refurbishment works of the historic Victorian Union Terrace arches.

The project is reported to be part of the council’s City Centre Masterplan, which will see the transformation of Victoria Park in Aberdeen with improved access, amenity and activity while enhancing Union Terrace Garden’s heritage features.

Project works are expected to begin this year with completion expected in mid-2021.
