Balfour Beatty has been awarded around £50m contract to carry out essential upgrade works for London Underground’s Piccadilly line.

This contract is the first of many packages to be given under the new ‘London Underground High Voltage (HV) Power framework’, to which Balfour Beatty was hired earlier this year.

The London Underground High Voltage (HV) Power framework will run for six years and has the potential to be extended by another two years.

Under the contract, Balfour Beatty will be responsible for the design, supply and installation of new assets along the Piccadilly line to support the increase in ‘Traction Power’ needed to operate the next generation of trains.

The new generation of trains will be introduced from 2025.

Following completion, the project will also support a 23% increase in capacity on the Piccadilly line at the busiest times, with new trains slated to operate every 135 seconds from 2027.

Works to be carried out include the renewal and replacement of old assets such as High Voltage and Low Voltage Switchboards along with new HV Cables at many substations across the Piccadilly line including Hyde Park Corner, Cockfosters, Sudbury Hill, Northfields, and Leicester Square.

Upgrade works will commence this month, with completion anticipated in 2025.

During the construction peak, Balfour Beatty will employ around 80 people.
