US-based health system AtlantiCare has commenced construction on a $38.3m Medical Arts Pavilion in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The three-storey building will expand AtlantiCare’s resources to increase access to care and address healthcare disparities.

It will also expand Medical Education opportunities for medical students and residents to address the anticipated national shortage of primary care providers.

The 69,700ft2 facility will be constructed at 7 South Ohio Avenue just across the street from AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center (ARMC) Atlantic City Campus.

The Medical Arts Pavilion plans to focus on closing the gap of healthcare disparities in underserved populations.

It will house a significant suite of services for women, children and families and provide services to prevent maternal and foetal deaths, consequently supporting the health and well-being of families.

The new facility will expand AtlantiCare’s high-risk maternal/foetal medicine programme, family planning services and provide dialysis centre space for AtlantiCare’s joint venture with Fresenius Kidney Care.

It will provide services for a new family medicine residency programme, additional AtlantiCare programs and services as well as medical education classrooms.

Slated to open by the end of 2022, Medical Arts Pavilion will feature an amphitheatre with a capacity for 150 individuals along with patient care simulation rooms for medical education.

New Jersey lieutenant governor Sheila Oliver said: “Since the beginning of the Murphy administration, we’ve been having conversations with Lori and leadership in the hospital to conceptualise the construction of this building and facility.

“I can remember back 25 years ago people saying that the future economy of this country will be around healthcare. And here we are – healthcare is one of the biggest economic drivers in the United States and definitely in New Jersey.”
