New York’s governor Kathy Hochul has formally launched the $100m revitalisation project of the Albany International Airport in the US.

The project secured a $60m grant from the governor’s $230m Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition.

It intends to reimage the passenger experience by expanding the airport’s terminal and delivering other improvements to reduce congestion and ease passenger flow throughout the facility.

Hochul said: “Our upstate airports are essential to our local economies, and we are committed to making them as welcoming as possible for residents and visitors alike.

“These generational investments will continue to make Albany International Airport and airports across the state easier to navigate and more enjoyable to visit, creating a gateway to our top destinations that is truly worthy of Upstate New York.”

Some of the improvements to be carried out at the airport include the installation of a 30kW solar array on its rooftop, a new children’s play zone, an expand airside marketplace, upgrades to the conference facilities, a public arts area, and a new multisensory relaxation room.

Works on the project are expected to be completed in early 2025.

Albany International Airport CEO Phillip Calderone said: “This investment will not only make the travel experience that much better, but it will help create a new gateway to showcase all our incredible region has to offer.”
