The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $181m loan to support the Ahmedabad periurban Livability Improvement Project in the Indian state of Gujarat.

This project aims to boost urban liveability and mobility in the periurban districts of Ahmedabad.

Due to industrial expansion and labour migration, periurban regions frequently see the highest population growth rates but often lack access to quality essential urban amenities.

The Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA) is responsible for urban planning and infrastructure development in the city. Five growth centres in the area have been identified for more development.

It will include the construction of a 166km water supply system, 126km of climate-resilient stormwater drainage infrastructure, 300km of drainage systems, and four sewage treatment plants.

Furthermore, the project also includes ten junction enhancements along the existing Sardar Patel Ring Road to increase connectivity between periurban regions and the city.

ADB urban development specialist principal Sanjay Joshi said: “This project envisions the future of the areas surrounding Ahmedabad city to help control urban sprawl, a planning approach that can be replicated in other states.

“The project will help upgrade basic infrastructure and services and strengthen urban management in these areas to raise the quality of life of its residents and sustain economic growth.”

The ADB will also assist in bolstering the ability of the AUDA and urban local authorities in technology-based urban planning, climate change and disaster-resilient infrastructure, land development plans, and town planning schemes.
