The Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced the completion of construction of its Bay View Boulevard project in Abulug, Cagayan, Philippines.

The Abulug-Ballesteros Bay View Boulevard project is aimed at improving access to tourism destinations.

This marks the conclusion of the fifth phase of the coastal development initiative in Barangay Bagu.

The newly completed boulevard stretches 490 metres (m) and features a 6.7m-wide concrete pavement.

DPWH secretary Manuel Bonoan, referencing a report from DPWH Region II director Reynaldo Alconcel, noted that the project also includes pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, slope protection, and a seawall.

Bonoan said: “Abulug-Ballesteros Bay View Boulevard serves a crucial role in safeguarding the area against potential storm surge and flooding while providing a venue for various tourism-related businesses along the coastline as it provides a panoramic view of the beach.”

Local fishers are expected to benefit from the project, with the inclusion of a dedicated port intended to support and enhance the fishing industry in the area.

Construction of the boulevard was carried out by the DPWH Cagayan 2nd District Engineering Office with a budget of 26.9m pesos ($0.47m).

This amount was allocated from the 2023 General Appropriations Act under the Tourism Road Infrastructure Program.

The DPWH has also completed upgrades to two sections of the Dipolog – Sindangan – Liloy Road in Zamboanga del Norte.

The project is said to have improved transportation links in the municipality of Sindangan.

DPWH Region 9 director Cayamombao Dia detailed the project.

It included the reconstruction of a 4.4km stretch in Barangay Manawan and the concrete paving of a 1.5km section in Barangay Motibot.

The scope of the road projects encompassed the installation of Portland cement concrete pavement, stone masonry, pipe culverts, and grouted riprap.

Additionally, thermoplastic pavement markings were applied as a safety enhancement.

The road rehabilitation and concreting efforts were undertaken by the DPWH Zamboanga del Norte 2nd District Engineering Office.

It included budgets of 49m pesos and 29.4m pesos, respectively.

In March 2024, the DPWH revealed the completion of an access road to Mount Cagua in Gonzaga, Cagayan, Philippines.
