BIG designs 58-storey tower for Telus in Canada
Denmark-based architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has designed a $400m, 58-storey tower for telecommunications firm Telus in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The 227m-high tower, named Telus Sky, will feature 341 residential apartments on the upper floors and shops on the ground floor.
Telus Sky will feature a total of 750,000ft² of space, of which about 430,000ft² of space will be dedicated for office use. Telus will take 155,000ft² of the office space.
The tower, which will replace the existing Art Central building on 7th Avenue, will feature a 5,500ft² public gallery to exhibit works of local artists.
Six architects shortlisted to overhaul Flinders Street station in Melbourne
The Victoria Government in Australia has revealed six shortlisted designs from an international competition to overhaul Flinders Street railway station in Melbourne.
The shortlisted architects include Ashton Raggatt McDougall; John Wardle Architects along with Grimshaw; the team of Hassell and Herzog & de Meuron; NH Architecture; Eduardo Velasquez + Manuel Pineda + Santiago Medina; and Zaha Hadid Architecture & BVN Architecture.

Siemens lays foundation stone for new headquarters in Munich
Siemens has laid the foundation stone for the company’s new headquarters in Munich, Germany.
The new headquarters, which will comprise ten interlinked structures, will be constructed by replacing the old building between Wittelsbacherplatz and Oskar-von-Miller-Ring in Munich’s historic centre.
Designed by Denmark-based Henning Larsen Architects, the building will feature offices, meeting and conference rooms, courtyards, restaurants, a garden, galleries, cafes and restaurants.
Spread across an area of 45,000m², Siemens’ new headquarters will consist of six rectangular, rounded volumes linked to a central vertical structure that will connect the entire complex, while the structure will have six different courtyards to facilitate interaction with the city.
Chalegrove gets approval for 75-storey mixed-use tower in UK
Chalegrove Properties has secured approval from Tower Hamlets Council in the UK to develop a 75-storey mixed-use tower on the site of the City Pride pub in the Docklands area of east London.
Designed by the UK-based architectural firm Squire and Partners, the 239m-high residential skyscraper will replace an earlier 63-storey proposal by Foster and Partners for the Westferry Road site.
The tower will feature around 822 residential units and 162 serviced apartments, and is expected to be the second tallest building in the UK.
The tower will also feature amenity floors, a roof terrace, basement car parking and cycle storage space.
Lend Lease begins £1.5bn Elephant & Castle regeneration scheme in London
Property firm Lend Lease has started construction of the first 500 new homes as part of the £1.5bn regeneration of Elephant & Castle in central London.
The project is being delivered by Lend Lease, in partnership with Southwark Council in the UK.
Work has started on the 37-storey tower named One The Elephant, which will feature 284 new homes.
Plans unveiled for world’s tallest commercial tower in Dubai
The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC) has unveiled plans to construct the world’s tallest commercial tower as part of a 107,000m² business park expansion plan.
Planned to be built in the Jumeirah Lake Towers (JLT) free zone, the business park and the tower, which are currently in the concept design phase, will cater to the needs of large and multinational businesses.
DMCC executive chairman Ahmed Bin Sulayem said the tower and the business park will attract companies to the free zone as demand grows.
Google submits plans for new London groundscraper headquarters
Internet search engine Google has submitted a planning application to Camden Council in the UK to build new £650m UK headquarters at King’s Cross Central in London.
Designed by architects Allford Hall and Monaghan Morris, the one million ft² building will range beteween seven and 11 storeys high.
After completion, the building will feature 725,000ft² of office space and 50,000ft² of retail space at ground level for a range of shops, cafes and restaurants.
World’s largest building opens in China
The New Century Global Centre, which is claimed to be the world’s largest building, has opened in China.
Located in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province in south-west China, the building will feature offices, conference rooms, a university complex, hotels and shopping malls.
The building, which is reported to be about three times the size of the Pentagon in Washington, US, also features a ‘Mediterranean village’, a 14-screen IMAX Cineplex, and an ice-skating rink.
