Notably, the number of artificial intelligence-related patent applications in the construction industry was 108 in Q1 2024, versus 116 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 41% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Caterpillar filed the most artificial intelligence patents within the construction industry in Q1 2024. The company filed 13 artificial intelligence-related patents in the quarter, compared with 15 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Assa Abloy with 12 artificial intelligence patent filings, China Communications Construction Group (10 filings), and Samsung Heavy Industries (6 filings) in Q1 2024.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 27% share of total patent filings
The largest share of artificial intelligence related patent filings in the construction industry in Q1 2024 was in China with 27%, followed by the US (25%) and Australia (2%). The share represented by China was 36% lower than the 63% share it accounted for in Q4 2023.
