Expansion work at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport has kicked off, with the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority’s board of trustees approving $500m plan to transform the airport, reported Reno Gazette Journal.

Construction works on expansion of the ticketing hall and inner road lanes at the Nevada airport have commenced.

The transformation plan also includes construction of two new concourses.

Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority’s board chairman Adam Kramer said: “The gateway to Reno-Tahoe is being re-imagined and rebuilt for the next century.

The new concourses form a part of the MoreRNO project, a multi-phase initiative announced by the airport in April this year to strengthen its several infrastructure such as roads, car rental facility.

The concourse work will commence in some time after the airport receives funding.

Passenger drop-offs are expected to be impacted due to the ticketing hall expansion work, which is expected to take about one year to complete and cost $32m.

The three inner lanes of the airport will also be closed to traffic, thereby restricting passenger pick-ups and drop-offs to three outer lanes.

This is considered as the largest construction project ever to be undertaken by the airport.

Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority CEO Daren Griffin said: “It’s a generational investment in airport infrastructure all designed to meet the growing need of Northern Nevada.”
