Laing O’Rourke Delivery has been appointed to build HS2’s new Interchange Station in Solihull, UK.

Under this £370m contract, the firm will work with HS2 in two stages – one to finalise the detailed design, and then to construct the station over the next few years.

Following the completion of the standstill period, the contracts will be signed.

HS2 procurement and supply chain director Andrew Cubitt said: “Congratulations to Laing O’Rourke who will be awarded this significant HS2 contract, which will not only unlock many jobs and business opportunities in the Midlands, but also provide hundreds of supply chain contracts for companies right across the country.”

The building site for the station encompasses an area of 150ha within a triangle of land formed by A45, A452, and M42.

HS2’s main works contractor Balfour Beatty VINCI are now preparing the site where the new station will be constructed.

Up to five trains will pass each hour via the station in both directions, with an estimated total of 175,000 seats per day.

It is expected to become the first railway station in the world to obtain the BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification at the design stage.

The station will have eco-friendly features to maximise natural daylight and ventilation, and roof design to store and reuse rainwater.

Furthermore, energy efficient technology will also be included into the station, such as air source heat pumps and LED lighting.

Growth plans around the site, which is being led by the Urban Growth Company, is expected to support up to 3,000 new homes, 70,000m2 of commercial space, as well as 30,000 jobs.
