The Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust has announced plans to construct two new hospitals in Birmingham, UK.
The £442m ‘Big Build’ programme will involve the construction of two new hospital blocks built, one at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital site in the city centre and the other at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital in Edgbaston.

The trust said that its ‘Big Build’ programme will cost less than the refurbishment cost to bring Birmingham Children’s alone to a basic operational standard. It estimated to cost nearly £763m.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Hospital requires around £36.5m bringing it up to operational and acceptable level.
According to the trust, both hospitals are beyond the natural operational life and its ‘make do and mend’ approach, as well as the increasing maintenance bill, makes it is time to build new buildings.
The Trust acting chief executive David Melbourne said: “These buildings are well past their natural life and are not suitable to providing the spaces and facilities we need for modern care.

The funding for the project will come from a combination of money obtained by selling the vacated land at the Steelhouse Lane site in the city centre, supported by national funding and fundraising support through the trust’s Charity.
Initially, the former dental hospital building at its Children’s Hospital and the Norton Court block at the Women’s Hospital will be demolished and these buildings will be replaced with the new buildings.
Subject to funding approval, construction work on the project is expected commence by 2023 with doors opening in 2025.
Once the new buildings are operational, the project will also allow the refurbishment of existing spaces.
The trust said that the work will now commence on a detailed outline business case.
