Strabag has been selected to deliver the infrastructure for the Waltrop Battery Park, a large battery storage facility under construction in Waltrop, Germany.
The project, backed by Trianel Batteriepark Waltrop, will have a prospective capacity of around 900MW and storage potential of approximately 1.8GWh.

The Waltrop Battery Park, which broke ground earlier this week, is expected to become operational in the second half of 2028. It aims to support grid stabilisation, manage congestion and enhance the flexibility of the electricity market.
Strabag’s remit includes the full development of the site infrastructure, turnkey construction of buildings for a 380kV substation, and provision of facilities needed for both building and running the battery storage plant.
Trianel Batteriepark Waltrop managing director Manuel Eck said: “The Waltrop Battery Park is set to become a key piece of infrastructure for the next phase of the energy transition.”
The construction site’s location within the port area introduces various logistical considerations.
Plans are in place to maintain access to a pipeline running across the area, accommodate port activity, meet the requirements for heavy-goods transport, and ensure clearances for existing extra-high-voltage power line masts.
The project team will also integrate existing groundwater monitoring points into the construction process.
Strabag executive board member Thomas Nyhsen said: “Large-scale battery storage facilities are a key component of a sustainable energy system. The necessary infrastructure forms the basis for their successful and long-term operation.
“We are therefore delighted to be contributing our expertise to the large-scale battery storage park in Waltrop and to support the expansion of a forward-looking energy infrastructure.”
The development is being undertaken by a consortium consisting of Luxcara, BKW, and multiple municipal utilities coordinated by Trianel through T-BESS 1.
Each of the companies will independently supply battery storage systems for the park, with Luxcara providing 520MW, BKW contributing 300MW, and T-BESS 1 delivering 80MW.
In May 2026, Strabag and its group company Züblin secured contracts for structural works on the ABS Gäubahn Nord rail upgrade in south-west Germany, which includes the Pfaffensteig Tunnel.
