Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract worth Dh2bn ($544m) for the Latifa bint Hamdan Corridor Development Project, which will extend approximately 12km across the city.

The scheme aims to improve connectivity between several of Dubai’s major roads and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.

The planned corridor will link Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Meydan Street, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.

The project is designed to serve existing and planned residential and industrial areas, and is expected to provide a new strategic east-west route across the emirate.

The Latifa bint Hamdan Corridor will feature seven bridges totalling 2,300m, eight tunnels spanning 900m, and an expansion of Latifa bint Hamdan Street to four lanes in each direction.

Additionally, the scheme features an integrated system of multi-level interchanges and loop ramps to provide uninterrupted traffic movement.

New cycling tracks totalling 12.5km will also be constructed to link with Dubai’s existing network, forming an integrated cycling route from Al Qudra to Jumeirah.

The RTA estimates that the new corridor will have the capacity to accommodate around 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, supporting more than 130,000 trips daily and serving approximately 650,000 visitors and residents.

Travel time between Umm Al Sheif Street and Emirates Road is expected to drop from 33 minutes to 15 minutes, a 54% reduction.

The project will also expand connectivity to several key residential districts and development zones, including Nad Al Sheba, Dubai District One, Al Barari, Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens, Dubai Hills and Global Village.

RTA Board of Executive Directors chairman and director general Mattar Al Tayer said: “Dubai has adopted a proactive approach to infrastructure development, centred on delivering major projects ahead of growth requirements.

“This ensures the road network is ready to accommodate the urban, population and economic expansion witnessed by the emirate.

“RTA continues to deliver strategic projects that strengthen connectivity between different areas, enhance traffic efficiency and ensure smoother mobility.

“These projects have a positive impact on quality of life and support the objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, both of which aim to reinforce Dubai’s leadership as a global model for sustainable urban development.” 

The project expands on a previous phase that improved the western section of Latifa bint Hamdan Street, which included new bridges and reduced travel times from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Khail Road.

According to the RTA, the new works are intended to complete the development of the corridor and further support Dubai’s economic growth and mobility objectives.

Last month, the RTA issued a request for qualifications for a contract to build the Gold Line, part of the planned expansion of the Dubai Metro network.
