The Victorian state government in Australia has disclosed the completion of construction on Town Hall Station, the first new train station in Melbourne’s central business district (CBD) in over 40 years.

The station sits beneath Swanston Street, and between the Collins and Flinders streets and will serve as a key access point to the city centre. It is one of five stations included in the Metro Tunnel project.

The station will offer three main entrances for passengers, including the rebuilt City Square, Federation Square, and within Swanston Street’s new Town Hall Place development.

A pedestrian underpass will also connect the station to Flinders Street Station through Campbell Arcade and the Degraves Street subway.

Passengers will be able to transfer between Metro Tunnel and City Loop services without needing to tap off their travel cards.

Town Hall Station’s design includes a large entrance hall beneath City Square supported by columns that extend upwards in a branching pattern.

The station features platforms that are 18m wide, which are said to be among the widest underground metro platforms globally.

It also uses a trinocular design, with three overlapping tunnels at platform level and an arched ceiling.

Construction on the station commenced in 2017 and required excavation reaching depths equivalent to a five-storey building due to the station’s central location and depth below ground level.

The complexity of building two stations in Melbourne’s CBD meant the Town Hall and State Library stations were completed after earlier stations at Arden, Parkville, and Anzac.

Construction of the internal structures at Town Hall Station required over 7,000 cubic metres of concrete and more than 2,200 tonnes of steel.

The completion of Town Hall Station marks progress towards the planned opening of the Metro Tunnel later this year, expected in early December.

Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan said: “This is the first new station in Melbourne’s CBD in 40 years.”

“We invested in public transport – and just look at the results.

“The Metro Tunnel will cut congestion and get you to work, uni[versity] and home sooner – and it opens this year.”
