Welcome to T&TI’s annual February “World Profile of Contractors & Consulting Engineers”. Now a long running yearly institution, the issue is a comprehensive listing of who’s who and who’s doing what where. It would be easy to look at this as just another boring collection of data, but scratch beneath the surface and there is a wealth of information to be had. This year we have been amazed at the depth of project detail that respondents have gone into.
Obvious again is the spread of work internationally, with both contractors and consultants stepping out of their domestic markets seeking work abroad. Winning work internationally is a skill worthy of study and investment, and, for the existence of many companies in today’s fiercely competitive market, a definite necessity. A common denominator between companies who have excelled on the international scene is their ability to hook up with local contractors and consultants to form successful international JVs. This is vital for many reasons, not least as a great way to begin meaningful dialogue with clients in foreign countries. Also it can access projects where funding requires local skills to be employed, or even on a more basic level, assist in understanding ‘construction culture’ overseas. Within these listings are major players from all corners of the world, some of which you may do well to think about making friends with, instead of competing against.
