The state government of Victoria, Australia, has announced that the Sunshine Station superhub project is moving forward, with procurement now in progress.
The project encompasses a programme of works spanning over 6km from West Footscray to Albion.
It includes the construction of two new dedicated regional platforms, an extended concourse at Sunshine Station, three new rail bridges, upgraded tracks, new signalling technology, and the realignment of passenger and freight lines.
The extensive works will be divided into five packages: enabling works, freight line works, metropolitan line works, regional line works, and the Albion Station redevelopment. Each package will address a different component of the overall project.
The initial packages will be delivered using the Level Crossing Removal Project’s programme alliance model, which has been established to eliminate congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2030.
The first package to be awarded, expected in early 2026, will be the enabling works. This includes the diversion, relocation, and protection of utilities and underground services necessary for major construction to commence on the subsequent phases of the project.

By GlobalDataThe regional line works package will be open to the market, with the formation of a new alliance to deliver this aspect of the project. The rest of the packages will be executed by existing program alliance teams.
The involvement of the existing alliances is expected to expedite the commencement of work and allow the project team to leverage their experience in rail network operations, specifically in the level crossing removals and network enhancement areas.
This programme of works is designed to prepare Sunshine Station to handle over 40 train services per hour, significantly increasing capacity for services to the growing western regions and the airport, states the government.
Design and planning efforts are currently underway, with construction expected to start in early 2026 and completion anticipated by 2030.
The project is set to support 1,300 jobs throughout its delivery.
In another infrastructure project news, the State Government of Victoria has announced the near completion of the Gippsland Line Upgrade, which is set to deliver improved train services for the Gippsland communities following a construction period later this year.
