Alterra IOS, a real estate platform dealing in industrial outdoor storage (IOS), in association with Eco Materials, a company engaged in construction resource recovery, has launched a $40m soil cleanwashing facility in South Philadelphia.

The new Wash Plant is designed to provide a sustainable construction waste recovery solution that repurposes over 85% of incoming materials for future construction use.

It utilises an “advanced” wet washing process to reclaim and repurpose sand, aggregate, and construction waste, a release from Alterra IOS stated.

The plant, located at 6110 West Passyunk Ave., is placed within a multi-acre industrial outdoor storage site, offering access to major regional infrastructure.

This facility is specifically designed to extract impurities, contaminants, and aggregates from excavated and contaminated soil.

Consequently, it produces quality soil, gravel, sand, and stone that can be utilised in public works, infrastructure projects, landscaping, and further construction projects.

This closed-loop system is said to aid builders in disposing of excavation waste and allows them to purchase certified clean materials from a local source, thereby reducing unnecessary transportation and the sector’s carbon footprint.

To ensure the cleanwashing process is as efficient and sustainable as possible, the facility is equipped with “advanced” machinery.

A high-capacity scalping screen at the front end segregates raw aggregates, allowing only usable materials to proceed through the system.

The AggMax system then separates stone, sand, and clay to facilitate material recovery. Lightweight contaminants are removed via a counterflow classification unit.

Water is continuously captured and recycled throughout the process via an integrated AcquaCycle system, which enables the recovery of up to 95% of water for immediate reuse.

Eco Materials managing partner & director of operations Andrew Paluszkiewicz said: “At, we believe construction and environmental responsibility can, and should, go hand in hand.”

“Our facility proves that sustainable resources — like reclaimed soil and aggregate — can be reused time and again, dramatically reducing landfill waste and helping to conserve our planet’s limited natural resources.”

The facility’s location is claimed to become a crucial resource for local contractors, developers, municipalities, and businesses.

These entities can now manage excavation waste and source “high-quality, sustainable” aggregates without the need for long-haul transport or the use of distant landfills, stated the company.

Alterra IOS co-founder and managing partner Leo Addimando said: “This facility represents the future of construction, where sustainability and profitability go hand in hand.

“We’re transforming dirty soil into clean, reusable material on site, and we’re doing it by cutting costs, reducing emissions and keeping the entire process local. This is a huge benefit for contractors, utilities, government agencies and developers looking to reduce costs and/or reduce their carbon footprint.”
