Hammersmith & Fulham Council in the UK has approved retail company Westfield’s £1bn regeneration and development scheme for White City, London.

The plans include the construction of 1,522 homes, a new public green, offices and the expansion of the existing shopping centre in Wood Lane with new restaurants, cafes and a leisure complex.
The development scheme originally submitted in August 2011 has now been scaled down, according to Hammersmith & Fulham Council.
The development’s residential buildings range from four to 12-storeys high with one 20-storey feature building.

The project includes 250 affordable homes and a new 59,000ft² shopping centre with a large anchor store, which will be carried out in phases over the next 17 years.
Westfield also plans to build a new bridge and pedestrian footpaths linking the east and west of the site, connecting Hammersmith & Fulham with Kensington and Chelsea.
Westfield will provide £20m for community improvements, including £3.9m for works to Shepherd’s Bush train station, with an extension to the ticket office, a new entrance and a longer platform.
About £1m will be used for highways and junction improvements, £450,000 will go to local buses and £75,000 for new town centre signposts.
Allies & Morrison acted as the architects on the project, while Montagu Evans was the adviser on Westfield’s planning.
The project will be carried out in stages over the next 17 years and is expected to bring up to 6,700 jobs to the area.
The two million square-foot site north of the current Westfield centre is divided by Ariel Way on brownfield land in the White City Opportunity Area.
Westfield opened its current White City shopping centre in October 2008.
