Architects from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in the US say the tidal action of New York City rivers could be used to produce power for the city.
New Jersey Instititute of Technology College of Architecture assistant professor Richard Garber and student Brian Novello put forward a proposal to use a network of modular floating docks to harness the energy.
According to their design, the docking stations would plug into the conventional piers of New York City. The piers would then be extended further into the river to optimise clean energy generation while increasing public green space and tidal pools for wildlife.
In an effort to harness energy from river currents three vertical turbines are fastened to the underside of modular floating dock units. Up to 24kW of constant energy created by the bi-directional 4mph current could be generated by each module.
