Western Kentucky University (WKU) has started construction on The Southern Gateway, a 1,000-bed residential complex forming the first phase of its multi-year Elevate WKU student housing initiative.

The project, set to replace the now-demolished Douglas Keen and Hugh Poland Halls on the main campus, is expected to open in autumn 2028.

The university has allocated about $350m for the development, which includes constructing the new building, paying off Student Life Foundation debt, and carrying out repairs and renovations to current facilities.

The Southern Gateway is being built through a public-private partnership between WKU and Gilbane, a company with experience in campus housing projects.

Gilbane was selected following a competitive request for proposals process. Mackey Mitchell Architects is responsible for the design.

The new residence hall will provide a mix of private and semi-private suites, offering various room types to accommodate different student preferences.

Each floor is planned to include lounges and shared spaces to promote community and interaction.

The ground floor will contain large common areas for studying, dining and social activities.

Planned features also include community kitchens, new dining options, a 24-hour study area and a multipurpose classroom to support the university’s Living Learning Communities.

Modern technology such as updated key-access systems, water bottle filling stations and ice machines is expected to be incorporated.

The facility is intended not only as accommodation but as a space supporting academic and social engagement.

WKU president Timothy Caboni said: “The Southern Gateway launches a new standard for what residential life can and will be at WKU, and Elevate WKU gives us a pathway to continue that work across campus. We are investing in the places where Hilltoppers live, learn and build relationships that make their time with us meaningful.”

Student input has influenced the design and features, with a campus-wide housing survey in 2025 receiving responses from 16% of the student body.

The university has also been holding student focus groups since early 2025, with ongoing feedback planned throughout the development’s subsequent phases.

Since 1999, WKU’s residence halls have been constructed and owned by the non-profit Student Life Foundation, created to address campus housing needs during periods of ageing infrastructure and limited state funding.

The Southern Gateway is the inaugural phase of a broader plan aimed at modernising additional residence halls, exploring new residential models, and further integrating student accommodation with WKU’s academic aims.
