Webuild secures nearly $2.35bn contract for Metro Line C extension in Rome

The new metro segment will traverse beneath the Tiber River through an archaeologically sensitive area.

Webuild has secured a contract valued at around €2bn ($2.35bn) to construct the T2 section of Rome's Metro Line C. The company's portion of the deal is €673m.

Roma Metropolitane, acting for Roma Capitale, awarded the contract, which tasks the Metro C consortium, headed by Webuild with Vianini Lavori as a partner, with a significant engineering project in Rome.

This new metro segment will traverse beneath the Tiber River through an archaeologically sensitive area.

The T2 section will stretch 4km from Venezia Station to Clodio/Mazzini and include four new stations: Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano (which connects with Line A), and Clodio/Mazzini.

Both Chiesa Nuova and San Pietro are designated as archaeological stations.

San Pietro Station will be located within Castel Sant'Angelo's gardens and is set to be the deepest station of this line segment at 48m below ground. Its design aims to enhance the adjacent square while preserving nearby historic structures.

Meanwhile, Chiesa Nuova Station will sit under its namesake square close to Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella and Oratorio dei Filippini, both notable for their historical and artistic significance.

A key technical challenge for this project is constructing diaphragm walls up to 90m deep using advanced technology proven during Venezia Station's construction. The route will also pass 25m beneath the Tiber River.

Currently, Webuild is finalising tests on Line C's San Giovanni-Colosseo/Fori Imperiali section, with anticipation of completing Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali stations by September.

Upon finishing Line C, it will cover 26km with 29 stations - 22 already in service - connecting Rome’s south-eastern outskirts with its north-west sector.

With a track record of developing 891km of metro lines globally, Webuild recently completed Milan’s M4 line end section, inaugurated Thessaloniki’s first automated metro in Greece, and opened Riyadh’s longest metro Orange Line (Line 3) in Saudi Arabia.

Its active projects include sections of France's Grand Paris Express lines 15 West and 16; lines 2 and 4 of Lima Metro in Peru; Sydney Metro–Western Sydney Airport line; projects in Melbourne, Australia; and nearing completion is Naples’ Metro Line 1 Capodichino station in Italy.
