Scandinavian contractor Veidekke has secured a design-and-build contract, with a value of Nkr400m ($38.6m), excluding VAT, for the new Kongshaugen treatment plant in Norway.

The project is part of the 'BLUE - Fjords for the Future' initiative, aimed at cleaning wastewater for nearly 50,000 residents.

The municipalities of Ålesund and Sula have entrusted Veidekke with the development of the treatment plant.

Veidekke Bygg Møre og Romsdal district manager Stig Mork said: “We are delighted to have won the competition for this commission, and we very much appreciate the vote of confidence.

"We are most grateful to have been given the opportunity to work closely with these two municipalities as we build vital infrastructure that will help make the fjords cleaner.”

The project involves construction works within the site's bedrock, including substantial concrete works, the boring of ventilation shafts, and the implementation of water and frost protection measures.

In addition to the underground facilities, Veidekke will construct a two-storey administration building spanning roughly 1,000m².

This will include associated foundation works and landscaping. The company says it is committed to sustainability, planning to use low-carbon concrete for all structures and electric trucks for the majority of material transport.

The project will not only enhance the cleanliness of the local fjords but also ensure compliance with formal wastewater treatment requirements in both municipalities.

Construction of the project's caverns is ongoing, with Veidekke scheduled to begin its portion of the work this September and completion expected by January 2028.

The project has already been registered in Veidekke's second-quarter order book.

Last month, the company secured the construction contract for the Brf Aroma project for OBOS Nya Hem, involving new apartments and rowhouses at Träkvista torg in Ekerö, Stockholm, Sweden.
