Turner Construction Company, alongside Byrne Construction Services and Straight Line Management, have reached a milestone in the construction of the University Health Palo Alto hospital in San Antonio, Texas, US.

During this topping-out event, members of the project team, University Health personnel, and community officials participated in signing the final steel beam, signifying the end of the structure's vertical construction.

Turner Construction Company vice-president and general manager Kyle Weller said: “Together, we are building a world-class healthcare facility that reflects the strength and spirit of this community. We are honoured to play a role in bringing vital services closer to home for families in San Antonio’s South Side.”

The hospital, which carries an investment of $550m and spans five storeys, is poised to provide essential health services to one of the area's rapidly expanding populations.

The facility will feature an array of amenities upon completion. These include an emergency department, suites for labour and delivery, a neonatal intensive care unit, surgical rooms, and patient wards.

The development will also feature an adjoining medical office building to cater to immediate and long-term health requirements.

University Health CEO Ed Banos said: “We’re building more than just hospitals - we’re building a healthier, stronger South Side.

“This project is rooted in our mission: expanding access to healthcare, developing a dynamic community hospital and supporting public health on the South Side. This isn’t just growth. It’s transformation - from the ground up, for all of us.”

The anticipated opening of both the University Health Palo Alto hospital and its connected medical office building is set for 2027.

The hospital is situated on the same grounds as University Health Vida, a multispeciality health centre that will also serve as the new headquarters for the University Health Institute for Public Health.

This facility is expected to open its doors later this year.
