French engineering group Systra has completed the acquisition of Australia-based multidisciplinary engineering company BG&E for an undisclosed sum.

BG&E, which employs more than 800 staff members, operates in Australia, Asia, New Zealand, the UK, and the Middle East.

The deal will see Systra consolidate its international operations and diversify its expertise beyond transport infrastructure into a broader range of complex building projects.

BG&E managing director Frank Cerra said: “Over the past 55 years of our operations, we have been involved in some of the largest infrastructure and buildings projects in Australia and overseas. Therefore, it made perfect sense to team up with a bold, innovative and technically excellent engineering firm like Systra.

“Joining Systra is the right cultural and strategic fit for BG&E, enabling us to embark on the next stage of our growth journey.”

The combined entity will offer multidisciplinary engineering services for the full project life cycle, drawing on a network of specialists capable of supporting projects globally.

This development strengthens Systra’s ability to deliver technical solutions in line with international standards for clients operating in sectors experiencing continual growth and transformation.

Through this acquisition, Systra will also increase its workforce in Australia and New Zealand to over 1,000 employees.

BG&E’s established presence in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates will also provide Systra with expanded access to these non-European markets.

Systra CEO Jean-Charles Vollery said: “We are delighted to welcome the talented BG&E teams to Systra. Together, we have a unique lever to support the transformation of infrastructure in Australia, New Zealand, and beyond.

“This partnership reflects our growth ambitions and our aim to be the signature team for engineering in the transport and complex buildings sectors worldwide.”

Last week, Systra won a 12km urban road infrastructure project in Turkey.

The company has also recently strengthened its knowledge and skills in transport systems and infrastructure with the acquisition of Spanish engineering company Ardanuy Ingeniería.

In August this year, Systra was selected to serve as the lead engineering partner for the development of a new metro network in Visakhapatnam, located in Andhra Pradesh, India.
