Synthica breaks ground on new RNG facility in Ohio

The plant will feature an anaerobic digester that will provide a RNG energy source.

July 28 2023

US-based renewable natural gas (RNG) development company Synthica has broken ground on its new RNG facility in St Bernard, Ohio, US.

The facility is located at 5410 Vine Street and will process approximately 200,000tpa of waste, which would otherwise likely end up in local landfills and sewers.

According to Synthica, the facility will benefit manufacturers as they can cut down on waste transport distance, costs, and associated fuel emissions.

In addition, the anaerobic digester at the plant will provide an RNG energy source.

Synthica's founder and CEO for St Bernard Sam Schutte said: “The US currently has only a few dozen stand-alone systems that digest food waste. Synthica St Bernard is filling the void and putting Cincinnati on the map as a leading hub for renewable energy.

“Local demand is significant right now. Despite being home to hundreds of manufacturers, there are currently no anaerobic digestion plants within 50 miles of Cincinnati.

“That means operating a food manufacturing plant in our region is more expensive than in places like Cleveland or Columbus, because of the increased cost of hauling away byproducts.

“That puts Cincinnati at a distinct disadvantage when trying to attract and retain businesses.”

The anaerobic digester being constructed in St Bernard will employ time-tested technology to convert waste into sustainable energy.
