Strabag has been awarded a €152m ($170m) contract for the first construction phase of the new central emergency department at Klinik Favoriten hospital in Vienna, Austria.

Commissioned by the Wiener Gesundheitsverbund (Vienna Healthcare Group), the contract covers construction works and the installation of key technical and engineering systems.

This first phase, set to become operational in 2030, forms part of one of Vienna Healthcare Group’s largest ongoing projects.

The new central emergency department will be situated within a 65,000m² facility, designed to consolidate several medical and diagnostic services under one roof.

Planned spaces include units for patient admission and initial treatment, intensive care, outpatient clinics, diagnostics, intervention facilities and inpatient wards for disciplines such as internal medicine and pulmonology.

According to Strabag, its remit on this project is notable for combining both construction responsibilities and the delivery of all core building systems such as electrical engineering, energy distribution, ventilation, air conditioning and building automation.

These services will be provided by Lohr Gebäudetechnik, a Strabag subsidiary.

The company stated that integrating construction with technical building services from the outset addresses the complex operational demands of modern hospital environments, where reliability and uninterrupted medical services are essential.

Work at Klinik Favoriten will take place directly next to intensive care units, outpatient clinics and other sensitive medical facilities that must remain operational throughout the construction period.

This proximity requires strict adherence to hygiene standards and construction methods that minimise noise and vibration.

The project site is also constrained by limited space and only a single access point, conditions that necessitate careful logistical planning.

According to Strabag, the success of the project therefore relies not only on the quality of the construction itself but also on effective coordination of complex processes to avoid interrupting hospital operations.

Strabag CEO Stefan Kratochwill said: “Hospitals are high-tech buildings. This makes an integrated approach that brings together construction and technical building services from the outset all the more important. The fact that the Klinik Favoriten contract covers both areas confirms our ability to deliver complex construction projects from a single source.”
