Germany-based railway infrastructure company DB InfraGO has appointed STRABAG to carry out construction work on multiple segments of the Fehmarn Sound Crossing project.
The project will create an underground tunnel connection intended to link the island of Fehmarn to the German mainland.
The tunnel will measure approximately 2.2km in length and is set to replace the existing Fehmarn Sound Bridge.
It is designed to increase transport capacity for both vehicles and trains. The road section will have four lanes divided between two tunnel tubes, and a separate area will accommodate two railway tracks in different tubes.
The Fehmarn Sound Crossing forms part of the broader Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link, which aims to improve connectivity along the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor (SCM).
The SCM runs for a total distance of 11,925km, factoring in the Connecting Europe Facility 2 extension. This route passes through seven countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, and Italy.
For this project, DB InfraGO and project management company DEGES share joint responsibility for its design and construction phases. STRABAG has obtained several critical contract packages for its delivery.
One package involves earthworks, civil engineering, and superstructure works assigned to a consortium that includes STRABAG, Johann Bunte, ZÜBLIN, and Eiffage Infra-Bau.
Ground engineering services have been contracted to a group led by ZÜBLIN with PORR and Implenia.
Construction of the cut-and-cover tunnel sections, along with several trough structures, meanwhile, falls under another package managed by ZÜBLIN with support from other STRABAG units.
STRABAG management board member Jörg Rösler said: “The Fehmarn Sound Crossing is a high-capacity link whose significance extends far beyond the region itself. This project is an important step in the continuous development of Europe’s infrastructure and a clear commitment to modern mobility.
“With this contract, we are underscoring our leading role in the German infrastructure market. With around 40,000 employees in Germany, we have a strong local presence and are ideally positioned to play a leading role in shaping the country’s infrastructure modernisation drive.”
STRABAG maintains an extensive network for construction materials supply.
The company is involved in a range of large-scale infrastructure projects spanning roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, and waterways.
Last month, STRABAG Umwelttechnik was appointed by MVV Energie to construct a second river-source heat pump at the Grosskraftwerk Mannheim power plant site.
