The STRABAG, Equitix, and GLIL Infrastructure consortium has secured a contract from United Utilities to undertake the design, construction, maintenance, and financing of its £3bn ($4.02bn) Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP).
The consortium has established Cascade Infrastructure Limited as the project company responsible for delivering the HARP initiative.
In January this year, the STRABAG and Equitix team was selected as the preferred bidder for the design and construction role.
STRABAG CEO Stefan Kratochwill said: “Expanding our presence in the UK and investing in critical water infrastructure is a clear step in delivering on our Strategy 2030.
“With HARP, we are not only contributing to the long-term resilience of critical infrastructure but also strengthening our market position in the UK.”
The HARP project aims to ensure the long-term supply of drinking water to 2.5 million residents across Cumbria, Lancashire, and Greater Manchester.
Central to this initiative is the upgrade of the 110km Haweswater Aqueduct, which was originally built between 1933 and 1955 to transport water from the Lake District to Greater Manchester via Lancashire.
The scope of the project includes the replacement of six tunnel sections of the existing pipeline.
The contract encompasses a period of 25 years.
STRABAG UK will lead the full design and construction efforts, with the project expected to take approximately nine years to complete.
United Utilities CEO Louise Beardmore said: “Today marks a significant step to ensure we have the right infrastructure to provide a resilient water supply to communities right across the region for decades to come and, at the same time, creating hundreds of great quality jobs and delivering on the commitments and promises we have set out.”
Earlier this month, STRABAG subsidiary ZÜBLIN began work on the redevelopment of the Arne Jacobsen Haus, the former headquarters of Hamburg’s electricity board.
The listed building in Hamburg’s City Nord district is being refurbished with ZÜBLIN as general contractor, acting on behalf of AJH after the planning phase.
