Skanska has secured a $163m contract from the New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) to build a new waterfront connection in Manhattan.

The project, known as the East Side Greenway 14th Street Connector, will link East River Park with Captain Patrick J. Brown Walk, improving access and connectivity along Manhattan’s East River waterfront.

The contract covers the design and delivery of an esplanade alongside Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) Drive.

The planned development will include a shared pedestrian and bicycle path, upgraded landscaping, seating, lighting and other public amenities.

The initiative aims to address a long-standing gap in Manhattan’s waterfront greenway network by replacing the existing narrow section with a wider, more accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists.

The New York City DDC will oversee the project on behalf of NYC Parks.

Skanska will partner with Claire Weisz Architects (WXY) for the design and engineering phases.

Early design work is expected to begin shortly, with construction anticipated to start in early 2028. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2030.

Skanska USA Building general manager and executive vice-president Sean Szatkowski said: “The East Side Greenway 14th Street Connector represents an important investment in New York City's public infrastructure and waterfront.

“We’re proud to be playing an integral role in delivering a project that will improve safety, expand access to open space and create a more connected, resilient and accessible waterfront for New Yorkers for generations to come.”

The scope of work includes constructing foundations, piers and superstructure to support the over-water section of the greenway.

Skanska and its design team will coordinate integration with existing infrastructure and utilities, including areas adjacent to Con Edison facilities, and provide amenities such as seating and drinking fountains.

According to Skanska, the design-build procurement model New York City adopted is expected to deliver the project faster than traditional methods.

The project aims to enhance recreational and commuting options, improve neighbourhood connectivity, and expand access to public open space along the waterfront.

Earlier this month, Skanska secured a $110m contract from Renton School District to build a new high school campus in Renton, Washington.
