Skanska receives £103m for UK’s high-speed railway project

The overall contract is currently worth around £1.3bn to Skanska.

July 04 2023

Construction and development company Skanska has been granted an additional £103m ($130m) award to use on phase one of the upcoming high-speed railway High Speed Two (HS2) in the UK.

Skanska, as part of the Skanska Costain STRABAG joint venture, is delivering a fully detailed design and construction plan for phase one of the project.

The contract will be entered into Skanka's Europe order bookings for the second quarter of this year.

The award of this contract is for use in pre-planned and agreed-upon modifications to the scope of work.

The overall contract is currently worth approximately £1.3bn to Skanska and encompasses the design and construction of significant tunnels in the project's southern segment.

The tunnels run from the London terminus at Euston station of the phase one route to West Ruislip in Greater London.

There has been significant development since HS2 was given notice to proceed in April 2020. Last year, two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) commenced operations from West Ruislip Portal to Green Park Way.

A third TBM is currently operating from Atlas Road to build a logistical tunnel between the Old Oak Common station and Atlas Road sites.

The preparations for the launch of the two last TBMs from the Old Oak Common Box to Euston are scheduled to start next year.

According to Skanska, the tunnelling programme in its entirety is expected to take three years.
