The National Health Service (NHS) National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) in the UK has reached a construction milestone with the completion of the building's frame, marked by a formal topping-out ceremony.

The event was hosted by Integrated Health Projects (IHP), a joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine.

It took place at the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate near Loughborough.

The ceremony saw an attendance of representatives from the Black Stork Charity, the University of Nottingham, Loughborough University, and more.

In 2020, IHP was selected as the main contractor to build the centre.

NRC director Miriam Duffy said: “We began this journey almost eight years ago in 2016, and so today’s milestone is testament to the teamwork and perseverance that have brought us to this point, which is another step towards opening our doors to patients in need of rehabilitation.

"The NRC will not only serve as a centre [for] rehabilitation excellence, but also as a symbol of hope for countless individuals and families across the country.”

The £105m ($130.95m) NRC project is constructing a 70-bed, energy-efficient facility that will be managed by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The three-storey facility is set to open in 2025 and expected to revolutionise clinical treatment for patients in the East Midlands.

IHP sector director Mark Bessey said: “IHP is proud to be working with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust on delivering this flagship facility for the New Hospital Programme.

“The NRC sets new standards in terms of healthcare innovation and sustainability, providing world-class rehabilitation for patients and outstanding facilities for ongoing research and development.”

Research, innovation, and training at the NRC will be spearheaded by academic partners Loughborough University and the University of Nottingham.

These institutions are set to play a crucial role in advancing the centre's objectives.

National property and construction consultancy EDGE is tasked with providing project management and NEC supervision services for the NRC scheme.
