New renderings of the Freedom Plaza development, a civic and cultural project in midtown Manhattan's East Side, US, have been revealed.

This project will deliver 1,049 residential units, with 513 designated as affordable housing.

It is expected to bring the largest influx of new homes in central Manhattan in more than ten years and is a key part of the city's inclusionary housing efforts.

Spanning 6.3 acres from 38th to 41st Street east of First Avenue, Freedom Plaza is developed by Soloviev Group and designed by BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group.

Soloviev Group CEO Michael Hershman said: "Freedom Plaza represents a transformative vision for Manhattan's East Side, blending residential, cultural, and commercial spaces to create a thriving community that supports both working-class families and the region's continued economic growth."

The mixed-use development, constructed solely with union labour, will offer around five acres of public open space by OJB Landscape Architecture, alongside locally focused retail, and diverse shopping and dining experiences.

Additional amenities at Freedom Plaza will include a daycare centre, a food market, a museum, and a community centre.

Two hotels, developed by resort company Mohegan and the owners of Banyan Tree hotels and resorts, will be added to the area.

Soloviev Group and Mohegan claim to be focusing on job creation, supporting local vendors, and stimulating economic growth at both local and state levels, as well as funding infrastructure improvements.

Mohegan CEO Ray Pineault said: "Freedom Plaza embodies our commitment to creating vibrant, sustainable communities that drive economic growth and enrich local cultures. By partnering with Soloviev Group, we are excited to bring world-class hospitality, inclusive housing, and transformative economic opportunities to Manhattan's East Side."

A total of 26 key New York labour organisations and workforce development partners are stated to have shown their support for Freedom Plaza by signing memorandums of understanding.
