Fagersta Municipality and Norra Västmanlands kommunalteknikförbund (NVK) have selected NCC to complete the Floravägen retirement home construction in Sweden.

This project, which includes 100 residential suites, a kitchen, common rooms, earthworks, and a civil defence shelter, represents a turnkey contract valued at approximately Skr160m ($16.8m).

Following the bankruptcy of the Swedish engineering, procurement, and construction company Serneke, NCC has taken over the project.

Since March-end, NCC has been performing an inventory and investigation to price and enable the completion of the retirement home.

At the time of the takeover, the building's roof and facades were mostly completed, with interior work such as room layouts, installations, finishes, and furnishings still pending.

Fagersta Municipal executive board chair Åsa-Märta Sjöström said: “We look forward to restarting construction and completing the Floravägen retirement home together with NCC. The most important thing is now to complete the project.”

The Floravägen retirement home, designed by Winroth's architects, features a resting butterfly shape with two courtyards and a glass-roofed central atrium.

During the project's investigation phase, NCC has completed an inventory of the previous work, prepared a new indicative cost and schedule and developed new construction documents.

NCC Building Sweden Fagersta production manager Anders Lindkvist said: “NCC has constructed many similar projects and comes to this assignment armed with important experience from other retirement homes.

“Our partnership with NVK allows us to maintain close and open dialogue with quick decision-making processes, which is a considerable advantage for such a project given the importance of speed following a break in construction.”

The order for this project will be registered under the NCC Building business area in the second quarter of 2025.

Construction is set to commence in the same quarter, with a projected completion date in late 2026.

This announcement follows NCC's recent collaboration with Skaraborgsvatten on the Borgunda waterworks expansion project, also in Sweden.
