Meta has chosen Turner Construction Company as one of the contractors for its $10bn data centre project in Lebanon, Indiana.

The facility is projected to cover around four million square feet and provide one gigawatt (1GW) of capacity to support Meta’s technological operations, including artificial intelligence.

According to the project plan, construction activities are expected to employ over 4,000 workers at their highest point.

Upon completion, the site will create approximately 300 permanent positions related to data centre operations.

Meta will fund all energy costs associated with the campus, stating that this will prevent any additional charges for local residents.

The company has outlined its intention to match the energy usage of the data centre with clean or renewable sources.

Designs include features intended to reduce water use through a closed-loop liquid cooling system that reuses water. The campus is being developed with the goal of obtaining LEED Gold certification.

Turner Construction Company managing director Ben Kaplan said: “The scale of the Lebanon Data Center reflects the growing demand for high-performance infrastructure.

“We look forward to working alongside Meta and applying our integrated services and deep mission-critical experience to deliver this data centre safely, sustainably, and efficiently while supporting the long-term growth of the Lebanon community.”

The Lebanon campus marks one of Meta's largest infrastructure projects and represents a substantial investment in Indiana’s technology sector.

Last week, Meta broke ground on the data centre campus, assigning a value of over $10bn to the project, which includes both data centre infrastructure and investment in the surrounding area.

Meta attributes the size of the development to increasing computing demands and ongoing artificial intelligence initiatives, stating that facilities of this scale will be necessary to support its principal operations and AI activities.
