Liebherr supplied its 81 K.1 fast-erecting crane for the construction of the Cascata D’Otro Mountain Lodge in Alagna Valsesia, Italy, enabling completion of the project as scheduled.

From May to November 2025, the crane operated at the site in the municipality of Riva Valdobbia, handling the logistical requirements of building within a restricted mountain valley.

Project managers selected the Liebherr 81 K.1 for its compact transport dimensions and ability to navigate narrow winding roads, limited storage areas, and reduced manoeuvring space.

Throughout construction, the team adapted the crane’s hook height and jib length to meet evolving site conditions on uneven alpine terrain.

The equipment’s variable settings allowed it to maintain stability and facilitate material handling despite natural slopes and confined areas.

Rapid set-up and flexible configurations contributed to maintaining planned timelines while enabling safe lifting operations in hard-to-access zones.

Liebherr said that variable weather conditions at altitude, including shifting winds, low temperatures, and early snowfall risks, did not prevent steady progress.

The crane supported consistent workflow by ensuring precise placement of materials required for the modern accommodation complex.

The completed lodge provides independent apartments, including accessible units, along with facilities such as a reception area, restaurant, bar, and shared spaces.

Bertini Costruzioni is the contractor for the Cascata D’Otro Mountain Lodge.

Bertini Costruzioni site manager Andrea Fiorenza said: “The crane’s exceptional flexibility makes our work significantly easier. Particularly on a project with many logistical challenges, it is a real advantage to rely on technology that adapts quickly and reliably.”

Developers approached the project with an emphasis on minimal visual impact and integration into the surrounding environment.

Construction practices prioritised careful management of mobility on site to support a responsible tourism model in line with regional goals for sustainable development.

The new mountain lodge expands accommodation options in an area known for off-piste skiing and year-round tourism.
