The Queensland Government in Australia has named Lendlease as its preferred master development partner for the transformation of the former Visy glass recycling and manufacturing facility in South Brisbane.

This initiative will convert a 7.1-hectare site, situated between South Bank and West End and just 1.3km from the Brisbane CBD, into a mixed-use riverfront precinct.

Under the terms of this appointment, more than 4,000 new homes will be incorporated with extensive public open spaces running alongside the Brisbane River.

The precinct will also include riverfront promenades, boardwalks, plazas, amphitheatre-style spaces, parkland and routes for walking and cycling, which are designed to foster a connected and accessible riverside neighbourhood.

This redevelopment forms part of broader plans to deliver the first homes and significant public spaces in time for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Queensland Government has indicated that this timing is intended to create a new community destination and yield early benefits for local residents.

As the redevelopment progresses, the site is expected to support around 2,100 jobs per year during construction, with approximately 1,000 ongoing roles projected once the precinct is complete.

Planning and pre-development activities will continue prior to the expected site handover in April 2027.

Community consultations on the proposed masterplan are scheduled to take place in early 2027, providing local stakeholders with an opportunity to contribute to the planning process.

Lendlease development CEO Claire Johnston said: “The transformation of the former Visy site represents a rare opportunity to reimagine one of Brisbane’s most significant riverfront locations, deliver thousands of much needed homes, and create long term legacy.

“In partnership with the Queensland Government, we have the opportunity to create a new riverside destination that will help shape Brisbane’s growth and how people experience the city for decades to come. This is exactly the type of large-scale, city-shaping development that will provide lasting benefits for Queensland, bringing together housing, jobs and world-class public spaces.”
