Lane, the US arm of Webuild Group, has secured a contract worth $337m for design-and-build works for widening and upgrading Interstate 85 (I-85) to a 16km section in Gaston County, North Carolina, US.

The project, commissioned by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, covers the stretch between NC 7 (Exit 23) and east of NC 273 (Exit 27).

The work includes expanding the highway from six to eight lanes, replacing or widening six bridges, and rebuilding two interchanges to improve safety and traffic movement for commuters in the Charlotte metropolitan area.

Additionally, the contract includes upgrades to the junction of Belmont Mount Holly Road and US 29/74.

The project is scheduled for completion by 2029, and the work will be conducted while keeping the highway open, reducing disruptions to traffic.

Webuild, via Lane, is also engaged in other US projects such as constructing the twin Palisades Tunnels Project to enhance New York’s rail network, upgrading a portion of I-64 in Virginia, and expanding the Seminole Expressway/State Road (SR) 417 in Florida.

Further projects include the I-275/I-4 Downtown Tampa Interchange and connections between I-4 and Sand Lake Road, as well as I-4 and SR 535 in Orange County.

Recently, Webuild was awarded a contract worth around $600m by Diriyah Company to undertake new construction work on the Diriyah Square project in Saudi Arabia.

This adds to a series of contracts valued at approximately $2bn that Webuild has received in recent years to develop Diriyah.

Located north-west of Riyadh, Diriyah is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of At-Turaif and is set to become a significant cultural and commercial centre in the kingdom.
