Lane Construction, the US subsidiary of the Webuild Group, has secured a $389m design-build contract from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to modernise approximately seven miles of Interstate 64 (I-64) in Norfolk, Virginia.

The project covers the I-64 Hampton Roads Express Lanes corridor.

It will convert three existing eastbound (EB) and westbound (WB) general-purpose lanes and shoulders into one part-time, high-occupancy express shoulder lane and three general-purpose lanes in each direction.

Plans also include the widening or rehabilitation of 19 bridges and the replacement of two bridges along the route.

VDOT expects construction to be completed by late 2029.

With this project, the department aims to improve travel efficiency and reliability on this corridor by reducing congestion and introducing managed lanes for peak travel periods.

The agency has indicated that design solutions will seek to minimise traffic disruption during works and limit long-term maintenance requirements.

Lane Construction is currently engaged on other significant projects for VDOT, including work on the 4A/4B segment of I-64 from west of Denbigh Boulevard to east of LaSalle Avenue in the Hampton Roads District, as well as a $61m contract for the Minnieville Road Interchange in Prince William County.

The company is also conducting repairs at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach. This latest award follows Lane’s recent $643m contract for the Westshore Interchange project in Florida.

The firm has delivered projects such as the I-495 NEXT initiative in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and improvements at Naval Air Station Oceana.

“This award reinforces Lane’s leadership in delivering sustainable, resilient infrastructure in one of its key US markets,” the company said in a statement.
