Kier has been selected by the UK's Department of Education to redevelop the East Coast College campus in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.

Funded by the UK government’s £1.5bn ($1.99bn) Further Education Capital Transformation Fund, the initiative will replace the campus' existing facilities with an enhanced learning environment.

The new campus will feature a mock hospital ward, a student-managed hair and beauty salon, sports facilities, training kitchens and restaurants, a lecture hall, and digital learning suites.

These facilities are designed to introduce new courses for 16- to 19-year-olds and adult learners, meeting educational demand and bridging local skills gaps.

A key aspect of the project is its low-carbon operation ethos, with the installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels during construction to harness solar energy. This initiative will provide a clean energy source and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The design process also includes an enhanced building envelope fabric to minimise heat loss in the colder months and prevent unnecessary heat gain in the hotter months.

Work on the project is scheduled to commence in mid-2025.

Kier Construction Eastern & Midlands managing director Mark Dady said: "East Coast College is a landmark project due to the scale of teaching facilities on offer, and we look forward to continuing the great work that we have done to date with both the college and the Department for Education.

"Kier will use our extensive expertise in delivering first-class educational facilities to build a campus that will benefit the local community and support students to achieve their full potential, inspiring future generations."

Kier previously constructed the Western campus buildings opposite the new teaching block for the college.

In the domestic education sector, Kier Construction has completed over 260 projects in the past six years, including Mulberry Academy London Dock.

Ongoing projects include the King’s Academy Bay House School redevelopment in Gosport, Hampshire, which will see Kier installing new teaching blocks and refurbishing existing teaching spaces.
