Jacobs has secured a contract from Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE), Germany’s federal entity responsible for radioactive waste disposal, to deliver project support services for the Konrad Repository in Salzgitter.
The site, currently under development in Lower Saxony, is being prepared to function as Germany’s first licensed repository for low and intermediate-level radioactive waste.
The construction is expected to be completed in the early 2030s.
Under the agreement, Jacobs will provide consultancy services to monitor construction progress, validate planning principles and help optimise project delivery.
Tasks outlined for Jacobs’ team include analysing existing construction methods, revising project schedules and cost assessments, and advancing recommendations for efficiency improvements.
The Konrad project will transform a former iron ore mine into a secure storage facility, managed by BGE.
Once operational, it can store up to 303,000m³ of nuclear waste, mainly from the nuclear power sector and related industries.
The waste, currently stored at above-ground interim sites, will be transferred to Konrad for final disposal. There, it will be immobilised in concrete, and the mine’s cavities will then be filled and sealed to ensure long-term safety.
Jacobs executive vice-president Fiachra Ó Cléirigh said: “Delivering complex infrastructure projects in Germany requires a strong understanding of local regulatory frameworks, construction practices and site conditions.
“By combining on-the-ground insight with global project delivery experience, our team is helping BGE strengthen alignment between planning and execution while supporting efficient, predictable outcomes.”
The repository is subject to strict technical and regulatory requirements, covering seismic considerations, existing structural adaptations, and adherence to both mining and nuclear regulations.
BGE technical managing director Jürgen Korth said: “We appreciate that we have found very experienced senior advisors with expertise in construction management and schedule management over a public tender offer.
“We aim to support this project with best practice knowledge from other international infrastructure projects. This project is of great social significance to us.”
Jacobs’ involvement will focus on maintaining consistency between construction activities, timelines and cost management, while leveraging lessons learnt from other large-scale infrastructure projects in Europe.
Earlier this month, Transport Infrastructure Ireland selected a joint venture between Jacobs and AECOM as the programme delivery partner for MetroLink, a proposed high-capacity metro system intended to link Swords, Dublin Airport and central Dublin.
