J. Murphy & Sons is acquiring a 40% stake in Sydney-based contractor Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure.

The partnership with Abergeldie will help the British construction and engineering company expand its presence in the Oceania region.

Founded in 1994 by Mick Boyle and his wife Robin Craig, Abergeldie has more than 800 employees.

The Australian company, which reported a turnover of A$676m ($437.5m) in 2024, is engaged in the design and delivery of a diverse range of projects across the utilities, road, rail, and energy sectors.

The transaction's financial terms were not disclosed, and the deal is anticipated to close this month.

Murphy’s acquisition of the stake in Abergeldie represents the company’s latest move in its international expansion.

Since its founding in 1951, Murphy primarily operated in the UK and Ireland before extending its reach to North America.

The group entered the Canadian market in 2014 through a joint venture with Surerus Pipeline and further expanded into the US with the acquisition of WHC Energy Services in 2023.

Murphy CEO John Murphy said: “Having expanded into North America in recent years, this investment marks the latest step in our plans to extend our geographical reach whilst remaining focused on our commitment to improving life by delivering world-class infrastructure.

“We are very positive on the outlook for the Australian market and I am looking forward to working with the Abergeldie team to help them deliver on the next exciting stage of their growth plans, building on the great work they have done over the past 30 years.”

In October 2023, J. Murphy & Sons received the main construction contract for the Cambridge South station development project in Cambridge, England, from Network Rail.
