Construction company HOCHTIEF has been selected by the Federal Building Department to act as project partner in developing the Helmut Schmidt University campus of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg, Germany.

The agreement involves multiple construction and planning partners alongside the client’s representative.

According to HOCHTIEF, the total investment for the campus project stands at approximately €1bn ($1.1bn), with the company’s remit covering demolition works, extended shell construction, and facade installation as part of the “Campus DOK” initiative.

The value of this segment of the contract is estimated in the mid-three-digit million-euro range.

The scope of the redevelopment comprises new buildings and renovations across more than 100,000m2, including infrastructure and outdoor facilities, on a 205,000m2 site at Douaumont Barracks (DOK) in Hamburg-Jenfeld.

The German Armed Forces are providing the funding for the work, which aims to consolidate all university departments onto a single site.

The project will proceed under an integrated project execution (IPA) model, according to the Federal Building Department.

This approach unites all stakeholders - builders, planners, and clients - into a collaborative alliance that shares responsibility during both the planning and delivery phases.

HOCHTIEF CEO Juan Santamaría said: “This contract combines our end-to-end expertise in the defence and education sectors.

“We are delighted to be strengthening the infrastructure of the German Armed Forces and the City of Hamburg.

The cooperative contract model enables us to optimise the entire project holistically and minimise the risks for all parties.”

The IPA framework is intended to support efficient planning and construction by ensuring early collaboration among all parties involved.

Earlier this month, HOCHTIEF secured a contract valued at around €230m from the Federal Agency for Real Estate (BImA) to build the Max Rubner Institute research centre in Kiel, Germany.
