HOCHTIEF, a German construction company, has secured a contract to design and expand a 26km segment of the East Link railway near Stockholm, Sweden.

The project, in partnership with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), carries an estimated value of up to approximately €900m ($1.04bn).

Construction is expected to continue until 2034.

The section, called OL31 Vagnhärad, sits southwest of Stockholm and forms part of the planned 160km double-track East Link connection between Järna and Linköping.

According to Trafikverket, the East Link is Sweden’s largest infrastructure investment in recent history.

The scope of work includes the design and construction of several tunnels, large bridges, and a train station.

HOCHTIEF CEO Juan Santamaría said: “Our end-to-end capabilities as a leading infrastructure and services provider enable us to deliver high-quality rail assets. With the expansion of this rail link in Sweden, we are making a significant contribution to the growth of efficient and sustainable transport infrastructure in Northern Europe.”

Besides the latest contract in Sweden, HOCHTIEF is also working on several high-speed rail projects internationally, including a section of the California High-Speed Rail in the US and the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project in Australia.

In Germany, HOCHTIEF holds a contract from Deutsche Bahn for the expansion of a 42km double-track line on the right bank of the Rhine between Wiesbaden and Lorchhausen.

This project was awarded in July 2025 and will take place from July to December 2026. It includes the renovation of ten level crossings, upgrades at twelve train stations, and the construction of two pedestrian underpasses.
