Granite has been awarded a construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) project for the rehabilitation of Runway 1R-19L and the construction of Taxiway W at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in the US.

This initiative is a part of SFO's Capital Improvement Program, aiming to enhance and modernise the airport's infrastructure.

The project timeline is set, with preconstruction activities beginning last month and continuing until January 2026.

Major construction is scheduled to commence in March 2026 and is expected to conclude in November of the same year.

The project will see upgrades to the site's runway and taxiway systems. This encompasses hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement, lighting, drainage, signage, runway status lights, grooving, and striping.

Alongside the rehabilitation work, the existing Taxiway F1 will be removed to make way for the new Taxiway W, which will connect Taxiway A and L.

Granite vice-president of regional operations Brent Fogg said: “We are committed to building a lasting collaboration with SFO and all stakeholders to deliver this critical infrastructure efficiently and effectively, while minimising disruptions for both employees and SFO passengers.

“We are honoured to partner with the exceptional SFO team to enhance the airfield and uphold SFO’s reputation as the Best Airport in North America.”

Granite will utilise its Santa Clara facility to supply approximately 185,000 tons (t) of P401 and P403 HMA for the project.

The total anticipated construction value of the project is estimated at $115m, which was included in Granite's second-quarter capital allocation plan.

This new contract follows a previous agreement secured by Granite in May of this year, where the company was awarded approximately $26m by SFO to upgrade Taxiway Z and a portion of Taxiway S.
