A joint venture (JV) between Gamuda and MiTAC Information Technology Corp has been awarded a contract valued at T$29.22bn ($901m) to design and construct the Keelung Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system and trackwork in Taiwan.

The contract was awarded by the Department of Rapid Transit Systems of the New Taipei City Government.

Gamuda holds a 72.84% participating interest in the JV, giving it a share of the contract worth about RM2.71bn ($663m), according to a filing on Bursa Malaysia.

Taiwan-based MiTAC, a subsidiary of the MiTAC-Synnex Group, holds the remaining 27.16%.

The Keelung MRT project will cover 15.6km of track and include installation of railway systems across 13 stations, serving New Taipei City, Taipei City and Keelung City.

The scope of work includes trackwork, rolling stock, signalling, power supply, platform screen doors, communication systems, central monitoring systems, automatic fare collection systems and depot maintenance equipment.

The construction period is scheduled to run for 2,820 days, or about 7.7 years.

Gamuda described the Keelung MRT contract as one of the designated additional works under the Xizhi–Donghu MRT project, which the company secured on 22 October 2024.

The group said: “The project is expected to contribute positively to the revenue and earnings of Gamuda Group from the financial year ending 31 July 2027 until the completion of the project.”

Gamuda stated it will announce material developments related to the contract as necessary.

MiTAC specialises in information technology and systems integration, including various railway system solutions.

The MiTAC-Synnex Group reported annual revenue of $94bn and employed approximately 508,000 people as of 2025, according to company disclosures.

Last month, a joint venture between Gamuda Australia and BMD Constructions secured a contract worth approximately A$624m ($444m) to upgrade sections of Elizabeth Drive and Mamre Road in Western Sydney.

The project involves improvements to 4.5km of Elizabeth Drive and 3km of Mamre Road, along with associated civil, structural, and utility works to facilitate the expansion of the transport corridor.
