A joint venture (JV) between Gamuda Australia and BMD Constructions has been awarded a contract valued at around A$624m ($444m) to upgrade sections of Elizabeth Drive and Mamre Road in Western Sydney.
Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) awarded the contract, with construction expected to begin later this year.
The works include upgrades to 4.5km of Elizabeth Drive and 3km of Mamre Road, along with integrated civil, structural and utility works to support the corridor’s expansion.
These routes form major transport corridors in Western Sydney, enabling greater connectivity and supporting projected population and industrial growth in the region.
Elizabeth Drive is considered a significant east-west corridor in Western Sydney.
The upcoming works aim to widen the road to two lanes in each direction, provide a median island, and include landscaping and pathways to improve safety and relieve congestion for neighbouring communities.
The upgrade will run from the M12 Motorway to Devonshire Road and include a wide median for potential future expansion.
Safety improvements at certain points have either been completed or are slated to commence in the near future.
Mamre Road, another important route, serves the Western Sydney Employment Area and the prospective Western Sydney Aerotropolis.
Works between Erskine Park Road and Kerrs Road will span 6.1km. Planned improvements include widening the carriageway, upgrading two intersections, modifying pedestrian and cyclist crossings, and adding shared-user paths.
The goal is to accommodate increasing traffic volumes, currently around 20,000 vehicles per day, which are anticipated to double by 2041.
The infrastructure upgrades align with the rapid growth of the Western Sydney region and the impending Western Sydney International Airport, expected to open later this year.
The upgraded transport links are expected to provide additional road capacity and improve connectivity as regional development continues.
This contract is part of nearly $3bn in current road upgrades across Western Sydney, jointly funded by the Albanese and Minns Labor Governments.
Other contracts awarded in the region include upgrades to Garfield Road East, Henry Lawson Drive and The Horsley Drive.
Earlier this month, the Riverside Link Consortium, which includes Gamuda Engineering, Gamuda Australia and MTR Corporation Australia, was awarded an A$880m ($633m) contract to deliver the future Parramatta metro station.
