FlatironDragados, in partnership with Herzog via a joint venture (JV), has secured a $414m contract from the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) to construct the Franconia-Springfield Bypass project in the US.

The infrastructure initiative will include the development of a 1.5-mile-long passenger railroad track and a rail flyover bypass bridge extending over half a mile.

This infrastructure is also expected to address the congestion between Fredericksburg and Washington, D.C..

Construction is scheduled to commence this month and is expected to be completed by 2029.

FlatironDragados executive vice-president Jim Schneiderman said: “We are excited for the opportunity to begin construction on Franconia-Springfield Bypass project in collaboration with VPRA and our construction partner Herzog. This partnership leverages expertise developed on projects throughout North America.

“This project will provide safer, more efficient rail service by reducing congestion and improving reliability.

“As construction begins, our team will continue to collaborate with VPRA and other stakeholders to identify innovative solutions to challenges as we transform rail infrastructure in this key market.”

The FlatironDragados-Herzog JV will collaborate with VPRA, CSXT, Amtrak, Virginia Railway Express, and other overseeing agencies to deliver the project.

Herzog executive vice-president Scott Norman said: “Herzog is proud to be working alongside our JV partner FlatironDragados to construct the VPRA Franconia-Springfield Bypass project along with our partners at VPRA.
