Spanish transport company Ferrovial and real estate builders and construction company EBA have broken ground on a new school of medicine in Spain.

The new School of Medicine, Nursing and Physiotherapy is being built for the University of Basque Country in Bilbao.

Ferrovial will build the nine-storey building with a floor area stretching over 44,500m² in collaboration with EBA, a subsidiary of Grupo San José.

The estimated value of the development contract is more than €51m ($330m).

The institution, which will provide undergraduate courses in medicine, nursing, and physiotherapy, as well as seven master’s degrees in the health sciences, and is anticipated to open in 2026.

Under the agreement, the partners will further improve the surrounding area by upgrading pavements, improving access, constructing an internal plaza, and a new street that will connect the institution to Basurto Hospital via a pedestrian walkway.

Basque Government's president Iñigo Urkullu, Regional Government Education Minister Cristina Uriarte, Bilbao mayor Juan Mara Aburto, and Bizkaia general deputy Elixabete Etxanobe attended the ground-breaking ceremony.

Earlier this month, Ferrovial was awarded a €300m contract by the Catalonia regional government’s Territory Department of Spain to Ferrovial in a consortium with Sacyr, Copisa, and Copcisa.

The contract aims to expand Spain’s Llobregat-Anoia line of Barcelona’s Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya commuter rail system.
